Rangers’ Decision Forces McCrorie To Abandon Auchenhowie, Crushing Scotland’s Euro 2024 Bid.
The 25-year-old shot-stopper has been a bit-part player at Ibrox ever since his emergence in the first team in August 2021, and since then he’s only gone on to make five league appearances, with zero so far in 2023/24.
The Light Blues reportedly wanted as much as £1million in the summer to sell McCrorie, with his first-team opportunities increasingly limited at Ibrox under Michael Beale’s management following the signing of Jack Butland.
Under new boss Philippe Clement, McCrorie is still yet to make an appearance and according to a recent report, the goalkeeper is desiring an exit in January.
Scottish news outlet Daily Record reported on 20 December that McCrorie is “keen” to get a loan move away from Rangers in January in a bid to force his way into the Scotland squad for Euro 2024.
The paper reported via their website on 20 December that the back-up Gers keeper wants games elsewhere as he hopes to get into Steve Clarke’s side for the summer tournament.
The national team boss had previously suggested the 25-year-old would need to make a switch to play enough for him to assess his ability when speaking about his prospects in November.
However, it’s safe to assume at this moment in time, those hopes and dreams of making the squad in Germany next summer are in tatters unless he forces through a move.
The young goalkeeper could have sealed his desired exit during the summer transfer window when Jack Butland joined.
Mail Plus reported on 11 August, that Premier League giants Manchester United were joined by Hull and Polish champions Rakow Czestochowa in battling for the 25-year-old who is “unsettled” at Rangers and “eager to start afresh away from Ibrox”.
It is believed that Rangers would not have stood in McCrorie’s way regarding a possible exit.
The shot-stopper enjoyed a promising run in Michael Beale’s first team last season when he kept clean sheets in wins against Celtic, Aberdeen and St Mirren during a four-game spell in May [SofaScore].
Since then, the 25-year-old has become an afterthought at Ibrox, especially after the signing of Butland when at one point during the summer, it seemed as if he’d be Allan McGregor’s long-term successor after his retirement.
It is clear that Butland is now swiftly the undisputed Rangers number one and will certainly continue that way throughout Clement’s reign.
It certainly isn’t the Belgian’s fault but the young shot-stopper is certainly losing patience and it is the reason why he may already have his locker cleared ahead of a January exit. It’s the best decision for his flailing career. In other Rangers, one senior player may well have started his last game at Ibrox after what he did against Celtic.
