Brad Holmes’ First Draft Pick, Jermar Jefferson, Eager to Showcase Potential

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – When Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes traded up in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to select linebacker Derrick Barnes, he didn’t expect to still be on the clock when the seventh round rolled around. But there he was, with the 257th overall pick, and a player he had his eye on all along was still available: Oregon State running back Jermar Jefferson.

“When we made the trade and got pick 257, I didn’t really think he would still be on the board,” Holmes said after the draft. “So, we were very, very happy about him.”

Jefferson, a three-year starter for the Beavers, averaged 5.7 yards per carry during his college career and displayed impressive explosiveness with runs of 65, 75, and 82 yards in a two-game stretch in 2020. He also showcased his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, recording 43 receptions with only two drops in his collegiate career.

Projected to be a fourth or fifth-round pick, Jefferson fell to the end of the seventh, fueling his determination to prove himself in the NFL.

“Just keeping that chip on my shoulder and just knowing that I’ve got something to prove,” Jefferson said after the conclusion of rookie minicamp when asked1 about his seventh-round selection.

Jefferson’s opportunity to showcase his potential comes at an opportune time. With the release of veteran running back Kerryon Johnson following the draft, Jefferson finds himself third on the depth chart behind D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams.

“It’s a good situation in Detroit for Jefferson with the experience he has in front of him,” said an NFL scout who requested anonymity. “He’s got a chance to learn from two talented backs and develop his game.”

At rookie minicamp, Jefferson impressed with his elusiveness, quick feet, and ability to run behind his blockers. He also showed a willingness to be a vocal leader, offering tips and encouragement to his fellow rookies.

“He’s a natural leader,” said Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery. “He’s got a great personality and he’s a hard worker. He’s going to be a great asset to this team.”

As the Lions prepare for training camp, Jefferson is focused on continuing to improve his game and earning the trust of his coaches and teammates. He knows he has a lot to prove, but he’s confident that he’s up to the challenge.

“I’m just going to keep working hard and show everyone what I can do,” Jefferson said. “I’m excited to get to work and show the world what I’m capable of.”
