Patrick Bamford will be in Daniel Farke’s thoughts for Leeds United’s trip to Southampton after a fun week of training at Thorp Arch.
The striker is back to full fitness after suffering a hamstring injury in a pre-season friendly match at Hearts on July 30.
This problem comes after two severely disrupted seasons, in which Bamford only appeared in 25 Premier League matches.
Ankle, hamstring and foot problems have blighted his 2021/22 campaign and a groin injury kept him out of action for some time last season and required minor surgery.
He then missed the final game of the season after suffering a hamstring injury at West Ham United.
Farke liked what he saw from Bamford in pre-season and is delighted to have the striker back as they prepare for the Saints.
“Obviously he’s not in perfect rhythm, he hasn’t played since the penultimate pre-season game, but he’s got another week left,” Farke said.
“Participating in team training this week has been extremely beneficial for him and he is a target for the team on Saturday.
It has improved a lot.
Two weeks back in training he is definitely target for the team on Saturday.
Farke admitted Bamford will need time to return to his best form, but his presence will strengthen an attack that is already in good form.
“There was an old rule that a player had to stay on the training ground that long to be ready to play with confidence, even when he was away,” Farke said.
“Patrick has experience and for attacking players the pace can be faster.
I hope he won’t be ready for another 8 weeks.
He is very motivated to participate, I can see that in training.
He is in a good mood and knows he is a good player.
Very good player
Bamford has been joined in his rehabilitation by Junior Firpo, who is yet to feature in a match for Farke.
The left-back has been having knee problems and recently returned to training only to feel some discomfort in his hip.
Willy Gnonto also had to sit out after suffering an ankle ligament injury in the 0-0 draw against Hull City.
Farke expected the Italy international to be sidelined until at least the October international break after requiring surgery on the injury, but the operation went ahead as planned.
And Djed Spence completes the unavailable group as he recovers from a knee problem.
“Everything is going well so far [with the rest of the team],” said the German.
“Willy has to rest until the next international break, Firpo has not returned to training yet.
Gnonto has had successful surgery and is on the road to extensive rehabilitation.
Djed Spence also needs time.
More or less that’s it.
