Craig Shakespeare guided Leicester City to the Champions League quarter-final after taking over from the sacked Claudio Ranieri in the 2016-17 season
Former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare is receiving treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
One year after winning the Premier League as Leicester’s assistant manager, Shakespeare took over the reigns at the Foxes as caretaker boss when Claudia Ranieri was sacked. During his short stint in charge, he guided the 2016 Premier League winners out of the relegation zone and to the 2017 Champions League quarter-final
He oversaw a stunning victory over Sevilla, before eventually being narrowly beaten by eventual finalists Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. The news of his diagnosis was revealed by his former club on social media.
A statement from the club said: “Former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare has revealed that he has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment. Craig is very grateful for the kind well-wishes he has been receiving and for the privacy that he and his family have been shown during this challenging time.
Leicester City Chief Executive Susan Whelan said: “Everyone at the Club sends their strength and support to Craig, his wife Karen and their children Elle and Jed. They will all be in our thoughts and prayers as Craig progresses with his treatment, surrounded by the love befitting his place in the hearts of the Leicester City family and the wider game.”
