Arnaut Danjuma scored his first Premier League goal for Everton against Sheffield United last time out.
Everton secured their first point of the Premier League season with a 2-2 draw against Sheffield United on Saturday. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Arnaut Danjuma both got on the scoresheet for the Toffees.
For Danjuma, this was his second strike for Everton, since joining the Merseyside outfit on loan this summer. His first came as the winning goal in a recent 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup.
Goal scoring has been a real issue for Everton recently. They didn’t manage to find the net in any of their first three Premier League outings this season, and Sean Dyche spent the bulk of the summer seeking to improve his squad’s attacking contingent. Alongside Danjuma, strikers Beto and Youssef Chermiti, and Jack Harrison were brought to Goodison Park with this aim in mind.
Dyche and the Everton fans will be desperately hoping that Danjuma can now go on a prolific run of form in front of goal.
If he does, then they will see plenty more of the Dutchman’s trademark ‘Cobra’ celebration.
The 26-year-old demonstrated the ‘Cobra’ as he celebrated his strike against the Blades. The celebration involves him crooking his arm and pointing his hand downward, mimicking the shape of a serpent rearing up from the ground.
Danjuma has explained to the official Premier League Twitter account the meaning behind the celebration. He said, “the reason for my celebration goes back to my childhood. I’m still with the same group of friends and when we were young, we were always outside and playing five-a-side.”
“A particular friend of mine, we nicknamed ‘The Cobra’ because of the way he played football.
They are all still together and very supportive, they are always in the stadium, they’ve always supported my career and are part of me.”
“We’re all still together and as part of that togetherness, it’s my way of saying thank you to them. The Cobra [celebration] is for my friends, they were with me and they are still with me.”
Dyche will be hoping to see plenty more of the Cobra from Danjuma this season. The 6-cap Netherlands international has the capacity to be a star for the Toffees, and if he can hit top form then he may well be able to fire Everton clear from relegation trouble. However, he has a point to prove in the Premier League, having struggled to shine for Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur in his two previous stints in the division.
