The Owls are still without a win this season after losing 1-0 at home to newly promoted side Ipswich.
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna says he “loved” his side’s battling 1-0 victory away at Sheffield Wednesday. The Tractor Boys only pipped Wednesday to the second automatic promotion spot last term by a mere two points.
And despite the slender margin of his team’s win at Hillsborough, Wednesday ultimately could not lay a glove on Ipswich. Conor Chaplin’s first half effort was the only difference but the visitors had ample chances to extend their lead and would have done so if it wasn’t for the Owls’ stand-out goalkeeper Devis Vasquez.
Speaking post-match McKenna said: “I really enjoyed it and I’m delighted for a lot of reasons. We said to the players before the game that this would maybe be one of the nicest ones to win to be honest. We obviously had battles with them last season and hadn’t manage to win here, because it’s obviously a very hard place to go and win.
“I thought it was a terrific performance. We came out in the first half and carved through them, really, and should have been two or three up at half-time. We got the one goal, which is what we deserved, then showed some different attributes.
“We needed a second or third goal to kill it, really, but then at 65-70 minutes that should have been the scoreline. We had to show we could dig in and I loved the performance, showing so many good things, and I’m just happy for the players and the supporters.”
Wednesday will attempt to break their duck on Tuesday night with a visit from bottom club Middlesbrough in what looks, even at this early stage, as a vital relegation encounter.
