Joe Marler jokes he meant ‘headed’ assist | ‘Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton inspired me
England prop Joe Marler joked that he took inspiration from Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton for his bizarre headed assist in England’s victory over Japan!
Roberto De Zerbi continues to receive plaudits for the work he is doing in the Premier League with Brighton, even more so after a particularly impressive team goal from the Seagulls during their 3-1 over Manchester United at Old Trafford over the weekend.
De Zerbi’s blueprints were all over Brighton’s second goal of the game, as his team took the ball short from a goal kick and completed a series of 30 passes before Pascal Gross slotted home past former Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana.
The goal, which has since proved popular online, was captioned: “Thirty passes. Goal. De Zerbismo,” by Brighton’s official social media channels, with one twitter user commenting that the team had made it ‘so simple and easy’ that it had looked like a training game.
Brighton are currently fifth in the Premier League table on 12 points, having picked up four wins and one loss from their opening five matches of the 2023-24 Premier League season.
Next up for the Seagulls is a visit from AEK Athens in what will be their first ever fixture in European football, thanks to their sixth-place finish last season.
