Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has emerged as a top target for European giants Bayern Munich, according to German transfer outlet Fussballtransfers.
The Nigerian international was heavily linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium all summer following Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League, with both Liverpool and Nottingham Forest reportedly interested in acquiring his signature. The speculation didn’t end following the closure of the transfer window and Fenerbahce were said to have been readying a bid last week, with the Turkish transfer window remaining open until last Friday
Ultimately, Ndidi remained in the East Midlands and played a starring role in the 4-1 win over Southampton on Friday night, scoring his first league goal of the season as Leicester temporarily hit the top of the table.
The Portuguese international subsequently extended his contract at Craven Cottage, prompting the Bavarians to draw up another midfield shortlist. It is said that this list contains Ndidi alongside Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Nottingham Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare.
Ndidi will perhaps be the cheaper option of the four names mentioned, although that is unlikely to be an issue for a club of Bayern’s size
Leicester have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and will be hoping that their form continues, which could potentially open up an opportunity for Ndidi to remain at the club. He is a player who will retain hopes of playing at the top and is unlikely to accept another year in the Championship. Should Bayern’s interest become concrete, the lure of Champions League football plus the opportunity to win major honours may be too good to turn down.
There is also likely to be further interest from the Premier League in January and it will be interesting to see if bitter rivals Nottingham Forest come knocking again.
His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, prompting more speculation that the Foxes could look to cash in in January should they fail to agree an extension. According to reports in Germany, Bayern have identified the 26-year-old as a player capable of filling their midfield role after missing out on Fulham’s Joao Palhinha in the final stages of the window
