Speaking after Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, manager Luis Enrique said that he believes that Kylian Mbappé (24) is the best player in the world.
Mbappé scored a penalty during Tuesday’s victory at the Parc des Princes. It is the 16th-consecutive game in which the France captain has either scored or assisted – the best run of his career, whilst he has also been involved in 30 goals in his last 23 Champions League matches.
The AS Monaco academy product was frozen out by Les Parisiens at the start of the season. With Mbappé refusing to sign a contract extension, he was left out of the club’s tour of Japan and South Korea, before missing the Ligue 1 opener against FC Lorient, which ended in a 0-0 draw. However, since returning, he has been at his prolific best, scoring eight goals in just five matches in all competitions.
His manager has now heaped on the praise. “For me, Kylian is the best player in the world. But above his technical qualities, what has struck me is his human quality. It is a pleasure to see him in the dressing room. He is a leader, and he always has a smile,” said Luis Enrique in a post-match press conference transcribed by L’Équipe. Mbappé is one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or later this year, an individual prize that has so far eluded him.
