Burnley Women’s match against Newcastle United was postponed following the tragic death of Sheffield United’s Maddy Cusack
Burnley’s women’s match on Sunday has been postponed following the tragic death of Maddy Cusack.
Rebecca Sawiuk’s side are expected to face Newcastle United this weekend in a bid to extend their lead at the top of the National League North table.
But the match was postponed following the tragic death of Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack, just 27 years old.
The match between Nottingham Forest Women and Liverpool Feds has also been postponed.
Cusack began his career at Forest and is a former teammate of several players involved in both matches.
A club statement said:
“Sheffield United Football Club is extremely saddened to announce the sad news of the death of Maddy Cusack.
“Maddy, a player for the women’s team since 2019 and the Football Club’s marketing director, passed away on Wednesday.
“A well-respected player, Maddy reached the milestone of 100 appearances for Sheffield United Women last season.
In addition, she is a highly regarded colleague at the Bramall Lane office, transferring from the Foundation The Sheffield United community comes to the club in 2021 to help market all matches.

All remaining National League matches played on Sunday will observe a minute of silence before kickoff to honor and pay tribute to Cusack.
“This news is heartbreaking,” Burnley head coach Sawiuk said in a tribute on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Yesterday I heard a beautiful and touching tribute to for Maddy and I can only imagine how much light she brought to people’s lives.
