AC Milan put aside the disappointment of their derby with Inter to win 1-0 against Hellas Verona. Rafael Leao scored the only goal at the San Siro inside the opening 10 minutes as Milan made it four wins from five in Serie A and level on points with their city rivals at the top of the table ahead of the trip to Inter at Empoli on Sunday. Rafael Leao scored the decisive goal to help AC Milan come from behind to win at home against Hellas Verona, winning 1-0 in a match whose start was delayed 25 minutes due to bad weather.
Leao, Milan’s captain that day, was passed straight into the goal by Olivier Giroud in the 8th minute and deftly guided the ball into the top corner.
There were six changes to Milan’s side, including Marco Sportiello in goal when Mike Maignan was injured, and the substitute made a fine save in the first half to deny Michael Folorunsho.
It was a game with few chances apart from Leao’s goal and Christian Pulisic probably did better than Milan after turning to block, but the subsequent shot was too close to the goalkeeper and was pushed out.
American teammate Yunus Musah had another good chance to seal the victory in the closing stages, but he shot too close to Lorenzo Montipo at the time of goal and was denied.
The win takes Milan to 12 points and they sit second – for now – behind Inter Milan on head-to-head record, but their city rivals have a game in hand.
A 5-1 defeat to Inter Milan and a disappointing start to the UEFA Champions League campaign have tarnished Milan’s strong start to the season. These results also mean that Stefano Piolo goes into this match under some pressure and knows that another poor result will risk spiraling out of control. This fate was avoided.
It wasn’t a very impressive performance from Milan and given Verona’s poor record at San Siro, they won’t receive much praise for this victory either. But it’s still an important point to get them back on track.
