There were mixed fortunes in the Sky Bet Championship, as Karlan Grant and Taylor Gardner-Hickman both played for Cardiff, and Bristol City respectively.
Grant started for the Bluebirds as they won their third straight game. The forward started in Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Sunderland, where Mark McGuinness netted the only goal in the 87th minute.
Meanwhile, Gardner-Hickman came off the bench just before the hour mark for Nigel Pearson’s Robins side in their narrow 1-0 defeat at high-flying Leicester City.
Jamie Vardy scored from the penalty spot to earn Enzo Maresca’s side the three points at the King Power Stadium, in what was a controlling performance from the Foxes.
Those results see the Bluebirds and the Robins perched in 7th and 9th in the league table, each having played eight fixtures so far this season.
In Sky Bet League One, Jovan Malcolm played 70 minutes for Cheltenham Town but couldn’t prevent them suffering a 3-0 defeat at home to Stevenage.
Jordan Roberts opened the scoring for the visitors within the first ten minutes before a quick-fire double in the second half from Elliott List cast the managerless Gloucestershire outfit to their eighth defeat in nine games.
Four Baggies were plying their trade in Sky Bet League Two over the weekend, with an even share of triumphs and defeats for the club’s academy graduates.
There was joy for Rayhaan Tulloch and Bradford City, who played a vital role in thumping 4-1 win over Newport County at Rodney Parade.
Having set up Andy Cook for the opener, the 22-year-old netted the second goal of the afternoon for the Bantams with a smart first-time finish from inside the box following Kevin McDonald’s cross.
And Cook capped off a fine display by finding the net again twice to complete his hat-trick, lifting City to 11th in the table, three points off the Play-Off places.
Mo Faal also enjoyed victory in the fourth tier, playing more than an hour in Doncaster Rovers’ 2-1 win over Gillingham at the Eco-Power Stadium.
Ben Close bagged both goals for the hosts either side of a Conor Masterson strike, ensuring Grant McCann’s team earned their second consecutive league win.
However, there was disappointment for Ethan Ingram and Jamie Andrews, who saw their respective sides suffer late defeats.
Andrews was a second-half substitute in Grimsby Town’s 3-2 defeat at home to Crawley, a result made worse by the fact they had led 2-0 after half-an-hour.
Goals from Gavan Holohan and Abo Eisa were cancelled out by Liam Kelly and Ronan Darcy in the first half, before a gut-wrenching Danilo Orsi goal in the 96th minute cast Paul Hurst’s side to defeat.
Meanwhile, England youth international Ingram started and played the full 90 minutes in Salford City’s 3-2 defeat at Harrogate.
George Thomson’s spot-kick had the hosts ahead after 16 minutes before Sam Folarin doubled the lead seven minutes later.
But the Ammies fought back with goals from Curtis Tilt and Matt Smith, and looked to be good value for a draw, only for Abraham Odoh to score the winner for Harrogate in the 80th minute.
