Sean Dyche has revealed the main subject of his talks with potential new Everton owners 777 Partners, following the Toffees’ defeat to Luton Town.
Co-founders of the American investment firm Josh Wander and Steve Pasko were in attendance at Goodison Park on Saturday (30 September) as Dyche’s side were beaten 2-1 by Luton Town in what was the Hatters’ first Premier League win in their history.
777 Partners have agreed to a deal in principle to acquire Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in Everton [Sky Sports, 15 September] and a delegation met with Dyche at the Toffees’ training ground before the Blues’ first league win of the campaign over Brentford.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on Monday (2 October) he said: “I’ve explained it to them, as I do with you, I try and give an honest view of what I think the situation is, changing the story. I explained it’s mine and our job to do it.
“I think there was another side to it here, plenty of intent, good quality chances but the cutting edge that we need, the killer edge has got to change here. It’s been two years of the very same thing – decent football, try and score a goal, don’t quite score one, let one in, lose a game.
“That’s what we’re trying to change. It’s got to be a firmer mentality underneath it all to do that ugly stuff, the hard yards, that’s what makes successful teams.”
Dyche has never been a manager to sugarcoat things, and that is unlikely to change just because the club he is managing could potentially be under new management in the coming months as the former Burnley boss is aware things have to change at Goodison.
The Blues haven’t been bad at all this season, but their performances have not correlated with their results and that was once again the case on Saturday where despite creating plenty of chances, Dyche’s side were almost incapable of finding the net at times.
What Dyche is going to have to prove to the potential new owners is that he is the man to change the story at Goodison Park as it all well and good identifying the problem with the side, but ultimately does the Toffees’ boss have the skill to find a solution.
Losing in front of the new owners to continue a winless run at home wouldn’t have settled any nerves that the Everton boss currently has, but he can at least sit comfortably knowing he can get a tune out of this Everton side, as he showed against Brentford and Aston Villa, now he has to do it at home.
