NEWS UPDATE: Matt Hobbs has been speaking about whether Wolves will have the ability to spend money on new players in January….

Matt Hobbs has been speaking about whether Wolves will have the ability to spend money on new players in January, after the club turned a big profit in the summer window.

Wanderers fans will not forget the 2023 summer window in a hurry.

It was the window that saw many high profile players leave Molineux, as well as Julen Lopetegui – a top-class coach the club had long chased.

Lopetegui left because was unhappy about the club’s financial situation.

Wolves had to turn a significant profit so as not to breach profit and sustainability rules.

In the end, the club recouped around £145 million in sales.

The January window will open in just a few months, but will Wolves be spending? Sporting director Hobbs has given an answer…

Some have wondered if the club are now a bit more free because of all those sales.

Well, it looks like there will be some money to spend.

But Hobbs has warned that deals will only be done if they are needed and if they are the right profile of player.

He said on Wolves Weekly: “Not many clubs do business in January anymore. Generally if you’re doing a lot of business in January, like we were last year, you’re in trouble. And you’ve got a lot of stuff to rectify.

“It always just comes back to the right player. I think now we’ve dealt with what we dealt with in the summer, now it’ll just be the right player. If the right player is available at the right price then there’s opportunity.

“If the right player is there for the right price and I believe it’s the right value, then yes we probably would have the ability to do something.”

Hobbs then said that he sometimes gets sent transfer links from his team from social media about players that Wolves have never even discussed.

He puts that down to agents putting information about there.

So it seems the precarious financial position Wolves found themselves in in the summer isn’t so bad now.

Hobbs says Wolves will have the ability to do something if there is a player available for the right price.

But clearly, the intention is not really to spend. It’s just if something comes up.

Clubs don’t tend to do business in January anymore and if Wolves are to act in the next window, then it may only be one or two faces that come in.

But at least the potential is seemingly there.
