Aston Villa had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Molineux on Sunday, but their penalty application was rejected.
Pundits Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy believe Aston Villa should have been awarded a penalty against Wolves on Sunday afternoon.
This came from a situation in which Watkins scored the winner, only for a push by Wolves defender Matt Doherty to throw him off balance and cause him to deflect his shot.
Requests for a penalty were immediately rejected by the referee and the incident was discussed on the second day of competition.
Both Shearer and Murphy made it clear that Watkins should have been awarded a free-kick which, if converted, would have given Villa a 2-1 lead.
“If he didn’t push the ball, he would have had a clear shot at goal,” Shearer said.
“It was clear he was pushing him, enough to knock him off balance.
That’s why he missed the target like that.
For me, it should have been a penalty.
“
His colleague Danny Murphy added:
“It’s a classic case of:
because he took the shot they didn’t reveal it.
If he passes and leaves the ball behind, they lose it.
Analyzing Watkins’ overall performance, Murphy said:
“Villa:
A great start to the season.
A big plus is that Ollie Watkins, who has just seen his England squad recalled – that’s right – to sign a new contract, scored plenty of goals.
Today he didn’t score but he played very well.
