Latest news from Aston Villa as Wolves defender Matt Doherty questions whether he should have conceded a penalty for fouling Ollie Watkins at Molineux.
Wolves defender Matt Doherty says his foul on Ollie Watkins should ‘never’ have been a penalty.
Doherty pushed Watkins from behind as he scored to make it 1-1, denying the Aston Villa striker and causing him to shoot wide of the post.
There were widespread claims that Watkins and Villa should have been awarded a penalty, but match officials disagreed.
Now, Doherty himself has spoken out about the incident.
Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) suggesting Villa should have been awarded a penalty, the former Tottenham player replied:
“Never.
Speaking about the incident on BBC’s Match Day 2 program this weekend, legendary striker Alan Shearer made his stance clear on the incident.
“If he didn’t push the ball, he would have had a clear shot at goal,” he said.
“Obviously he pushed him, enough to make him lose his balance.
That’s why he missed the target like that.
For me, it should have been a penalty.
Regarding Watkins’ overall performance, he added:
“That shows how important he is for Aston Villa.
“Obviously he likes football, that’s why he signed a new contract.
He’s playing really, really well.
