NEWS NOW: Brendan Rodgers told the Celtic transfer essential in January as their star `platform’ needed to unlock talisman…

The nifty Japanese attacker has started the season strong in front of goal but needs support.

Kyogo has been told back up should be coming in the January transfer window with Celtic urged to recruit another forward.

The Japanese talisman has been very much holding down the fort in an attacking sense for Brendan Rodgers’ side, with only young South Korean Oh being a recognised centre-forward at Parkhead. Kyogo isn’t shy in front of goal but has experienced recurring injury issues, with many Hoops fans believing the club have not effectively replaced Greek attacker Giorgos Giakoumakis who left for the MLS. Rodgers moved to sign the likes of Luis Palma and Yang on the wings, but one Hoops hero reckons the nifty Kyogo needs support.

Australian Scott McDonald was prolific in front of goal in green and white as a smaller in stature striker, and he reckons going to market in the winter to bolster forward options will only yield better performances from the Japanese. He also has to be put under ‘more pressure’ in a Celtic jersey.

On Kyogo, he told PLZ Soccer: “It’s difficult in European games because you can’t get the eights high enough to support him. One thing you would say about him is he doesn’t want to get involved in the game much, he’s not a platform to play off. In recent years gone by Celtic have played with a more physical nine. If you look back at Samaras, Sutton, Larsson back in those days.

“He’s smaller in stature and isn’t going to pin people and hold it up, he’s always looking to be on the last line…he’s always a threat. What I would say is he probably needs a little bit more support and it’s somewhere Celtic could look at in the window come January to bring another striker in to help him. To support him with the goals, and also put him a little bit more under pressure to get more out of him.”
