The Phoenix Suns’ coaching staff is headlined by head coach Frank Vogel. Vogel has had lots of success in the NBA. He has not done this by himself, it takes a great coaching staff to have a well coached team.
Vogel is very aware of this and has some of the best coaches in the business on this staff. The one that most NBA fans might know is David Fizdale. The former Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks head coach definitely brings a lot of experience.
He is not the only one who brings tons of experience to the staff. Kevin Young is the associate head coach. Young played his high school ball at Sprayberry in Marietta, Georgia. After high school he went on to play at Middle Georgia College before transferring to Clayton State University to finish his playing career.
Young would start his coaching career in Dublin, Ireland as the head coach of the Shamrock Rovers Hoops of the Super League. After one season there he would come back to the United States to be an assistant coach at Utah Valley State College and then go on to Oxford College shortly afterwards.
He started his NBA journey in the D-League, now known as the G-League, with the Utah Flash. He would make a few stops in the G-League after Utah. Coaching the Iowa Energy and Delaware 87ers before becoming an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Young was an assistant coach for the 76ers from 2016-2020 before joining the Suns staff. Young is now the associate head coach under Frank Vogel. Vogel and star player Devin Booker are ecstatic to still have Young on the staff.
Devin Booker and Kevin Young are the only player and coach from the 2021 NBA Finals team that are still on the Suns. The fact that Frank Vogel wanted him to be on this staff shows the value that he brings.
It would not be shocking to see his name brought up as a candidate for head coaching vacancies next season. Especially if the Suns live up to the high expectations that are around the team this season.
