Former Celtic hero Chris Sutton has had the latest say in his spat with Todd Cantwell.
The Rangers man has been embroiled in the off-field drama with Sutton for around six months now. The pair have Norwich City in common, but not much else it seems.
Recently, during the international break, Cantwell gave an interview where he slagged Sutton off in similar fashion to his former boss Michael Beale.
Sutton tends to have the last laugh in these things as Beale knows. He’s certainly put Cantwell back in his place by oblitering him on the Daily Mail’s ‘It’s All Coming Up’ podcast.
Sutton said: “The thing I don’t understand, I genuinely don’t understand, this season is there’s that old adage in football: ‘Do your talking on the pitch.’
“I think at this moment in time he’s away with the fairies. I just think for someone to date who has had a bang-average career, he doesn’t half have a high opinion of himself.
“The truth is he’s better known for his social media presence, being on TikTok, than he is for what he’s done on the pitch.” (@MailSport on Twitter)
The former Hoops striker certainly wasn’t holding back there. Ouch.
While this is clearly newsworthy enough for us to be reporting on, it really is pretty mad that one of the highest-profile Rangers has managed to find himself in this situation. His former manager was just the same.
Sutton winds these guys up and it suits his media persona. You get the impression he just laughs off the reactions he gets, while the Ibrox personnel take it much more seriously.
From a Celtic perspective, it can only be good to have players on the other side becoming embroiled in such public altercations. It’s something you simply wouldn’t see from our current squad. Matt O’Riley arguing with Kris Boyd would be our equivalent. It’s pretty laughable, isn’t it?
Cantwell would probably be better parking the online statements and explosive interviews, and focussing on trying to lay a glove on Celtic. Other than a meaningless match at the end of last season, he’s failed badly so far.
