West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt has reached a personal milestone now making 400 appearances in his career and the Baggies should ensure he reaches another 100 and beyond at The Hawthorns.
The 28-year-old has impressively worked his way back into Carlos Corberan’s plans at The Hawthorns so far this season, having spent a fruitful loan spell last season at Middlesbrough, and will be aiming to keep his place in the side.
With the Baggies undergoing a terrible run of injuries so far this season, Mowatt has become a crucial figure for Corberan when starting and coming off from the bench, featuring in eleven Championship games so far.
And his stats so far this campaign make for impressive reading but more crucially highlight how pivotal he is and will be for Corberan as West Brom chase an elusive Championship playoff place this season.
As per SofaScore, the 28-year-old has recorded a goal and an assist, successfully completed 92% of his passes showcasing his influence in possession for the Baggies, also completing 52% of his long balls, averaging 1.6 key passes per game but also excelling off-the-ball too averaging 0.8 interceptions, 1.3 tackles, only dribbled past 0.6 times and averaging 4.4 balls recovered per game.
Mowatt is also winning a whopping 72% of total duels in a West Brom shirt, winning 85% of his aerial duels and 67% of his ground duels so far this season.
The Doncaster-born midfield maestro is proving an absolute beast in the middle of the park, and it’s no wonder why the likes of Jayson Molumby and Nathaniel Chalobah – usual regulars under Corberan – rarely get a look-in so far this campaign.
However, despite his growing importance at the Hawthorns, his contract at the club still only has eight months to run with it ending in June 2024.
It remains to be seen whether Corberan and West Brom will be able to strengthen the squad as the Spaniard would like in the coming windows, although promotion to the Premier League would prove a huge boost to their finances.
Regardless, it will be mightily important for Corberan to keep the core of his squad together should they achieve their ambitions and Mowatt’s experience and quality in the midfield of the park makes him an undroppable commodity, even when the Baggies eventually reach the highest level.
400 appearances in the league in his career is a fantastic achievement, and one he will look back on one day with plenty of pride. West Brom will be incredibly silly not to ensure another 100 or so in Birmingham, they’ve got to sanction an extension to his current deal right now.
