A former Rangers target scores in the MLS to prove Kevin Clancy got a controversial Cyriel Dessers goal call right v Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.
The under-fire whistler courted controversy from Dundee fans and the usual suspects by letting Cyriel Dessers’ goal in the recent 5-0 Scottish Premiership Rangers win at Dens Park stand.
Dundee boss Tony Docherty described the strike – where Kevin Clancy had accidentally blocked off a Dundee player earlier in the move – as the most “bizarre” he’d ever seen.
But the explanation offered to the Dundee boss by Kevin Clancy with regards the goal – where it couldn’t be ruled out because Kevin Clancy didn’t touch the ball – has rung true over in the MLS.
In a mirror image incident in a clash between the Vancouver Whitecaps and LAFC, the referee accidentally blocked off a Vancouver player with the score at 1-0.
With the match in injury time, LAFC raced forward on the break with once Rangers-linked Denis Bouanga eventually finishing into an empty net with the keeper at the other side of the park.
However, to add extra confusion to the entire thing, the goal was eventually ruled out due to offside with Carlos Vela passing the ball forward to Denis Bouanga whilst being in front of the goalkeeper.
The fact the referee didn’t call the game back shows that Kevin Clancy applied the rules correctly in the case of Cyriel Dessers’ goal v Dundee.
Whilst the incident had little bearing on the outcome of the match, the wider discussion about how Rangers are officiated continues to permeate the Scottish football consciousness.
Whether it’s incidents such as the Dessers’ goal, or penalty shouts, the issue is a patently clear one for anyone paying attention.
It’s not about Rangers getting fair decisions, it’s about Rangers getting any decisions at all, with Kevin Clancy simply doing his job and applying the rules.
