Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has shared an update on injured Rangers ace Davis ahead of the international break.
The midfielder has been out of action for club and country since last December after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Davis was recently in the Gers dugout as interim manager before the club appointed Philippe Clement as their new boss.
Northern Ireland boss O’Neill has now shared an update on injured duo Davis and Leeds United man Stuart Dallas ahead of their two Euro 2024 qualifiers this month.
“It would be nice just to see him (Dallas) around again,” said O’Neill, as quoted by BBC Sport (8 November). “Steven the same, he plans I think to possibly come over for the Denmark game. I think it would give everyone a lift just to see the two lads back.”
The fact that Davis was trusted to be thrown straight into the deep end at Ibrox following the sacking of Michael Beale speaks volumes as to what those at the club think of him.
The veteran midfielder is clearly very highly regarded in Glasgow, and may just land another important role behind the scenes soon.
There is, however, still a chance that he can recover from his unfortunate injury and get back on the pitch to help Clement’s side.
O’Neill’s latest comments meanwhile also prove how special and important Davis is for the Northern Ireland national team. They have really missed their captain and leader in recent times, with the young group of players struggling lately.
Simply having the Gers ace around the camp may just be the boost that they need in order to finish off their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign as strongly as possible, with Finland and Denmark their remaining fixtures
