Breaking:Southampton just recieved sad and terrible news BBC confirms

Southampton manager, Russell Martin, has told of how he is a huge fan of Celtic midfielder, Matt O’Riley, as he nears his first international cap for Denmark.

O’Riley was called up again to the senior Denmark squad but has, so far, failed to win his first cap for the country. But Martin recalls the time he discovered the 22-year-old at MK Dons and it seems that even now O’Riley is at Celtic, he is still a massive admirer of the youngster.

Martin said [The Herald Sport pullout print edition page 6], “I could see right away that Matt was a brilliant footballer. He is an absolutely outstanding technician. Let me tell you something about Matt: his mentality was straight out of the top drawer. At MK Dons he was every manager’s dream.

“He was the consummate professional in his preparation. He was really into that and the recovery side of the game. He was a real student of football and was genuinely interested in how he could take his game to the next level and be the best he could be.

He is physically a beast too. I said when he first signed for Celtic that he would be one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership and I am delighted for him that he has proven that statement to be correct.

He’s grown into his role at Celtic and adapted to Scottish football so well. It is not hindsight or being clever after the event, I always knew he would.

Signed by Ange Postecoglou for £1.5m in January 2022, O’Riley arrived in Scotland as an unknown midfielder with many Celtic fans questioning how he would fit into the team.

Those questions were quickly answered as he made his debut against Hearts at Tynecastle when O’Riley set up the winner with a brilliant assist in the 2-1 win in the capital

O’Riley was also one of the best players on the pitch when Celtic annihilated Rangers 3-0 the following month to go top of the league where they couldn’t be shifted.

With out a league title in the bag, O’Riley was looking forward to Champions League football for the first time in his career. And he didn’t look out of place.

In fact, O’Riley was so comfortable in a Celtic jersey when Callum McGregor was injured, the 22-year-old stepped into the Hoops captain role and ensured that domestically, Celtic remained unbeaten.

As for his time under Brendan Rodgers, O’Riley’s game has been taken to the next level as he’s now becoming one of Celtic’s best players as he mixes it with Europe’s elite with club and country.

After signing a new deal in the summer, and four trophies to his name, Celtic have managed to stave off any hopes of clubs from England hoping to steal the talented midfielder.

But that hasn’t stopped the speculation surrounding him. Linked recently with Crystal Palace, O’Riley is also attracting the attention of the likes of Newcastle, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

With six goals and seven assists, the Denmark u21 international has been unbelievable for Celtic this season.

Rodgers himself has said of the midfielder, “But with Matty, I’m so, so happy for him

“He gets out of the game what he puts into it, he’s so professional, he has big quality, and like I said when I came in, we just needed to get more goals into his game.

In fairness to him, his timing and his finishing is quality. It was a big goal. He will only get better, he is only 22.”

Shining again in this season’s Champions League, it is only a matter of time before one of the clubs from Europe comes and tempt O’Riley away from Celtic.

But until then, the Celtic fans will enjoy the youngster as he has been one of the standout players at the club over the past two seasons.
