Buccaneers coach sends clear message to Baker Mayfield…
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added Baker Mayfield this offseason in hopes that he could help solidify the team’s quarterback position after the retirement of future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. And on Sunday afternoon, he certainly looked the part.
During the team’s 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Baker Mayfield posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating when he went 22 of 28 for 381 yards and four touchdowns through the air. And he got plenty of praise for it from his head coach Todd Bowles after the game.
“He’s meant everything,” Bowles said in his postgame press conference according to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers team website. “From a mental standpoint to a quarterback standpoint, making plays. From a toughness standpoint, from a leadership standpoint, he’s done everything. He’s checked all the boxes. He’s doing all the right things now and I can’t say enough about him.”
It’s been an up-and-down career for Mayfield since he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield struggled at times with the Browns and was traded to the Carolina Panthers once the team signed Deshaun Watson. Mayfield didn’t seem to catch on with the Panthers and was benched multiple times. He ultimately landed with the Los Angeles Rams, where he was impressive taking over the team following an injury to Matthew Stafford.
Now with the Buccaneers, it seems like Mayfield has revitalized his NFL career a little bit.
