Exclusive: Richard Sherman Throws His Weight Behind David Shaw
The Los Angeles Chargers recently interviewed former Stanford football coach David Shaw for their head coaching position. Richard Sherman, a former NFL cornerback who played at Stanford when Shaw was the offensive coordinator and later head coach from 2011 to 2022, expressed strong support for Shaw. Sherman took to Twitter, suggesting that Shaw is a great choice for the Chargers, praising his intelligence, leadership, and positive impact on team culture.
Despite Shaw not being an immediate front-runner, Sherman emphasized that the Chargers shouldn”t let this opportunity slip away and urged them to keep Shaw in the city.
Shaw boasts an impressive coaching record and ended his 12-season stint with Stanford as the winningest coach in school history, with a 96–54 overall record. He also has prior NFL experience, working with teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, Las Vegas Raiders (formerly Oakland), and the Baltimore Ravens in various assistant roles from 1997 to 2005.
While the Chargers have interviewed other candidates, including Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, the search for a new head coach is ongoing. The Chargers dismissed coach Brandon Staley on Dec. 15 due to a challenging 5–9 start to the season. The team has also parted ways with general manager Tom Telesco, leading to ongoing interviews for that position as well.
