Bears’ QB Mystery Deepens as GM Ryan Poles Considers Shocking Move

The Chicago Bears quarterback situation will remain unresolved until at least the start of the off-season in March. GM Ryan Poles indicated he could take that decision all the way into April. Either the Bears will take a quarterback at #1 overall, or they will keep Justin Fields and trade the pick for a second time. Recent insiders’ updates suggest Poles has already made that decision. He will trade Fields and take his favorite QB at #1, likely Caleb Williams of USC. At least one person refuses to believe that—defensive end DeMarcus Walker.

It’s been evident for months that Fields has the full support of the Bears locker room. Everybody, from D.J. Moore to Lucas Patrick and Jaylon Johnson, has spoken out about how Fields was never the problem on offense. The blame lay elsewhere, mainly on the poor coaching of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Count Walker among that group. A recent tweet by him suggests he holds that same unwavering belief that if the Bears can find the right coaching, Fields will ascend just like Lamar Jackson has.

On Saturday, Jackson played a stellar game against Houston in the divisional round, throwing two TDs and rushing for two more.

His tweet suggests a firm belief Fields will remain the starting quarterback in Chicago. This could mean he’s heard some things inside Halas Hall suggesting this is the case, or he is projecting his sincere hope the Bears do this. One can only imagine his reaction if they end up taking Williams or Drake Maye in April. While there won’t be a locker room mutiny as many fear, it won’t be a popular decision. If nothing else, this comment by the veteran defender is further confirmation Chicago made the right call firing Getsy.

Players aren’t stupid. They usually recognize before fans or media when a coach doesn’t have what it takes to do his job. The first red flag came when Fields himself expressed frustration he was being “overcoached.” Since then, others have come forward to express similar feelings. Moore called Getsy “fine” as a play-caller. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. It was obvious they had little admiration for him. DeMarcus Walker remains adamant Fields is a good coordinator away from breaking out.

It seems we’ll find out in 2024 whether he’s still in Chicago or not.
