Shockwaves as Albian Ajeti’s Celtic exit looms large! £5m striker released by…
Celtic flop Albian Ajeti is on the lookout for a new club – just six months after leaving Parkhead.
The Swiss striker, 26, endured a forgettable three seasons in Glasgow after Neil Lennon shelled out £5million to spearhead the club’s ten-in-a-row bid. Signed from West Ham, Ajeti managed just nine goals in 488 appearances for the Hoops and spent last season on loan with Sturm Graz.
After failing to win a deal with the Austrian side, Celts eventually managed to recoup a fraction of their initial outlay by offloading the forward to Turkish side Gaziantep. However, Ajeti’s time with the Super Lig outfit hasn’t gone to plan after featuring just five times and scoring once.
And now, it’s understood that the 11-times capped attacker’s one-year contract has been ripped up early – making him a free agent. However, reports in Switzerland suggest Ajeti could make a shock return to his first club FC Basel in a desperate bid to kickstart his career.
Ajeti’s stock with the Swiss Super League side skyrocketed after plundering 43 goals in almost 100 games across two spells. His goalscoring exploits convinced West Ham to splash out £8m for his services in 2019, but Ajeti has struggled to showcase his predatory instincts ever since.
Now, he could be handed a career lifeline by struggling Basel, who sit second bottom of the Swiss top-flight and in the relegation zone. Sports outlet Blick Sport claims the 20-times Swiss champions are working on a deal to bring Ajeti back to St. Jakob-Park in the hope he can fire them to safety.
