Breaking: Red Sox’s Major Blow as All-Star Slugger Snatched Up by NL West Rival
Another option reportedly is off the board for the Boston Red Sox.
Boston has been looking for a right-handed slugger to add to the middle of the lineup and has been linked to multiple players. One player who has popped up numerous times is one-time All-Star Jorge Soler.
The 31-year-old would’ve been a perfect option to help out as designated hitter and in the outfield for Boston, but he reportedly signed with the San Francisco Giants to a three-year deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser.
“Outfielder Jorge Soler and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a three-year, $42 million contract, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN,” Passan said. “Soler opted out of a $13 million contract — and gets more than that over three years. First with the deal was Susan Slusser.”
Soler was one of the top offensive players remaining in free agency and had arguably the best season of his career in 2023. He spent the season with the Miami Marlins and clubbed 36 home runs, drove in 75 runs, and slashed .250/.341/.512 while earning his first All-Star appearance.
The Red Sox had Justin Turner in the designated hitter role last season but he recently signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. Boston has a hole in the middle of the lineup and Soler would’ve made a lot of sense but now the club needs to go back to the drawing board.
Boston is starting to run out of options in free agency and will need to act fast.
