The Seattle Mariners made a few cuts from their major league spring training on Sunday, including sending down former Boston Red Sox’ slugger Michael Chavis.
Mariners roster moves: Michael Chavis, Isiah Gilliam and Nick Solak have been re-assigned to minor league camp, Blake Hunt optioned to Tacoma.
Chavis and Solak are the most notable of the group, as each has significant Major League experience.
The 28-year-old Chavis was once one of the best prospects in the Sox organization, making his debut in 2019. In that season, he showed significant power, popping 18 homers in just 95 games. However, it went downhill after that. He hit just .212 with five homers in the pandemic-shortened season (2020) and then hit just .190 with the Sox before being dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021. Since then, he’s also played with the Nationals, getting 48 games with Washington in the 2023 season
He had been competing for a backup infielders job with the Mariners and if he remains in the organization, he could find himself up in the big leagues at some point in 2024.
The 29-year-old Solak played just two Major League games in 2023, but has played for the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers in his career. He was a regular for the 2021 Rangers.
