Not even the return of star player Sebastián Driussi could give Austin FC its first win.

Though Driussi played the game’s final 27 minutes, Austin FC still had to settle for a 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union Saturday at Q2 Stadium.

Diego Rubio and Jon Gallagher scored within a three-minute span for Austin FC early in the second half, while Daniel Gazdag and Mikkel Uhre had the game’s bookend goals for Philadelphia.

In a highly entertaining, back-and-forth game, Austin FC wasn’t great, but it wasn’t poor, either.

The team looked especially solid early in the second half sparked by substitutions Owen Wolff in the midfield and little-used, 35-year-old outside back Hector Jimenez, who made his first appearance in MLS play since June 21.

Driussi played for the first time this season, coming on in the 70th minute as a sub, and put in a good shift.

Recovering from a minor hamstring injury, not a lot could be expected from him, but it’s a positive sign going forward for the club that he could play almost 30 minutes.

Austin FC coach Josh Wolff wasn’t thrilled with the team’s opening 15 minutes to the game, which is the third time this season it’s looked below average in the first half — though this performance wasn’t nearly as bad as the team’s showing vs. Minnesota or Seattle.

In his meeting with the press following the match, defensive midfielder Dani Pereira also expressed frustration with the how the team handled possession in the first half.

“We can’t keep throwing away halves,” said Pereira, who was generally one of the better players for the Verde & Black on the night
