“Am Leaving” Justin Hubert Announces His Departure from Chargers As Jim Harbaugh Replacement Is …
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has spent a lot of time watching video of Justin Herbert. The Chargers’ new coach said he watched all of Herbert’s games from the past season and he’s been impressed with the quarterback’s skillset as a passer.
“I’ve gone through all of his tapes, throws,” Harbaugh told reporters at the league’s winter meetings this week. “He can make ‘em all.”
Herbert is entering his fifth season and he already has posted big numbers.
Herbert has averaged more than 4,300 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes while completing 66.6% of his passes during his first four seasons. Herbert has thrown for more than 5,000 in a season once and has posted at least 30 touchdown passes twice during his career.
The expectation is Herbert will reach new heights under Harbaugh, who is known for helping quarterbacks elevate their performances. Harbaugh said the entire team will have a role in the success of Herbert.
“You have to have a connection with every other player on the team,” Harbaugh said. “[Offensive coordinator] Greg Roman will be an incredible help to Justin. I’m definitely gonna chip in there as well.
What has impressed Harbaugh more than anything else is Herbert’s desire to win.
“Getting to know him … how much of it is about the team and winning,” Harbaugh said. “How much he puts into it. How much he cares about it. There’s that part of him that wants it to be about the team. Being able to make that step to winning, I know that’s why he’s in it.”
Herbert and the Chargers slumped to a 5-12 record in 2023. The season was a huge disappointment after the Chargers reached the playoffs after the 2022 season. The hope is the arrival of Harbaugh and an improved Herbert will lead to the Chargers’ return to the postseason in 2024.
