Ryan Grubb is headed back to Washington. Grubb, who was initially expected to follow Kalen DeBoer to be Alabama’s offensive coordinator, is now expected to be the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, sources have told 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
The 47-year-old Iowa native has worked with DeBoer at each of his head-coaching stops: Sioux Falls, Fresno State, and, for the past two seasons, at Washington, during which the Huskies went 25-3 and finished in the top-15 in both total offense and scoring offense both seasons.
This past season, Washington went 14-1, won the Pac 12, and reached the College Football Playoff national championship game behind an offense that ranked No. 12 nationally in total offense and No. 13 nationally in scoring. Grubb was also the quarterbacks coach, meaning he worked directly with Heisman Trophy finalist Michael Penix Jr.
Grubb has previously coached running backs and receivers at South Dakota State; offensive line and run game coordinator at Sioux Falls; offensive line at both Eastern Michigan and Fresno State; then he became the coordinator at Fresno State and Washington.
Now he’s off to the NFL, the latest in a line of college coaches that are headed to the professional game. The list includes Jim Harbaugh, who left his post as Michigan’s head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, as well as Jeff Hafley, who was Boston College’s head coach and is now with the Green Bay Packers, among others.
Alabama never formally announced Grubbs’ addition, but he was seen on the recruiting trail over the last few weeks. Now DeBoer will be tasked with finding his replacement.
“I always am a believer that you build around your coordinators,” DeBoer said last month, when he was introduced as Alabama’s head coach.
