Jamaica’s Oblique Seviile upset world champion Noah Lyles to win the men’s 100m at the 2024 Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica.

The young sprinter set a personal best and a world lead to defeat the American, Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, and former European champion, Zharnel Hughes.

The 23-year-old dominated the race from start to finish, overpowering Lyles, Omanyala and Hughes in front of a jam-packed National Stadium in Jamaica.

Seville clocked 9.82 seconds to win the race. Lyles finished second in 9.85 seconds, while Kenya’s Omanyala took third in 10.02 seconds, per World Athletics. Hughes finished fifth in 10.09 seconds.

Seville’s previous personal best was 9.86 seconds, and his win in his home country sent a strong message to the 100m field ahead of the 2024 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Lyles has won two 100m races this season, but it wasn’t to be on Saturday evening. However, he is the man to beat in the 100m at the Olympics. He won three world titles at the World Athletics Championships last year and will be keen on getting his first Olympic medal later this year.

Omanyala’s wait for the first win of the season continues. The Kenyan is coming off a second-place finish at the Eugene Diamond League at the Prefontaine Classic.
