General Manager Breaks The Silence Of His Choice For QB With Prescott Out

Not only are the Cowboys sticking with Cooper Rush at quarterback this week, team owner/GM Jerry Jones said he’s expecting a better showing from his veteran.

In fact, Jones said Rush might have suffered an early-game injury to his neck when he fought for a fumble on the second series against the Eagles.

“I’m not so sure … he had quite a neck strain on that first fumble where he went down and didn’t get the recovery,” Jones said on 105.3 ‘The Fan’ Tuesday morning. “I’m not at all making excuses, but he was not the Cooper Rush that we know and how he can play. He can play better than that.”

Rush stayed in the game until the Cowboys decided to use Trey Lance some in the second half.

Dak Prescott is expected to be placed on injured reserve shortly, which will leave the Cowboys with only Cooper Rush and Trey Lance as active quarterbacks on the roster.

This situation is unusual for the Cowboys, who have preferred to carry three quarterbacks over the past two seasons, with Lance available as the emergency option if both Prescott and Rush are sidelined during games.

In response, head coach Mike McCarthy mentioned that the team is actively exploring free agency to add depth at quarterback after their game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys have already worked out a few quarterbacks in recent months as part of routine preparation.

“Definitely,” McCarthy confirmed. “We’ll likely keep those discussions going over the weekend. Anytime there’s an injury, you’re looking at available options. Jerry [Jones], Will [McClay], and Stephen [Jones] have already started the process, and I’ve been part of those conversations.”Dak Prescott is likely heading to injured reserve any minute now, quite literally, and that will then leave the Cowboys with Cooper Rush and Trey Lance as their only active quarterbacks on the roster.

That goes against what they typically want to do at the position, having carried three over the past two seasons with Lance serving as the emergency QB in the event of injury to both Prescott and Rush in games.

To that end, head coach Mike McCarthy stated the team is already scanning free agency options for a potential addition at the position following their matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles — having already worked out a couple of arms over the past few months for the sake of due diligence.

“Definitely,” McCarthy said. “We’ll probably continue those conversations over the weekend. You’re always looking at those lists any time you have an injury. Jerry [Jones], Will [McClay} and Stephen [Jones] have already started that process and I’ve been involved in those conversations.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that Tyler Guyton (neck/shoulder) has a good chance of playing next Monday night against the Houston Texans after being sidelined in Dallas’ 34-6 loss to the Eagles.

“He was in this morning early, I think they feel really good about him playing this week.” Jones said.

Similarly to when Guyton was injured against the Falcons, Asim Richards came in at left tackle and held down the fort in Guyton’s absence.

“I thought Asim Richards stepped up and did a nice job yesterday.” Jones said.
