Florida State Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn Announces Plans to Retire in 2025, Citing Personal Priorities

As the sun cast a golden hue over the practice field at Doak Campbell Stadium, Gus Malzahn stood at the podium, a bittersweet smile on his face. The room was filled with reporters, staff, and players, all eager yet apprehensive about the announcement that had been teased for days.

“Today, I’m here to let you all know that I will be retiring at the end of the 2025 season,” Malzahn began, his voice steady but tinged with emotion. “This decision has not been easy, but it’s one I’ve come to after a lot of reflection and conversations with my family.”

Citing a desire to prioritize his personal life, Malzahn shared that the rigors of coaching had taken a toll. “Football has given me so much, but it’s time I give back to the people who’ve stood by me through it all—my wife, my kids, and, most importantly, myself. Coaching at this level is all-consuming, and I want to spend my later years focused on family, health, and the passions I’ve put on the backburner for decades.”

Malzahn’s journey at Florida State began in 2022, when he joined as offensive coordinator. Known for his innovative play-calling and ability to develop young quarterbacks, he quickly transformed the Seminoles into an offensive powerhouse. His contributions were pivotal in Florida State’s ACC Championship run in 2023 and their subsequent appearances in the College Football Playoff.

Players and staff expressed mixed emotions about the announcement. Star quarterback Jalen Brooks described Malzahn as a mentor and a visionary. “Coach Malzahn changed my life. He believed in me when no one else did. It’s hard to see him go, but I know he’s making the right choice for himself and his family.”

As questions swirled about who might replace him, Malzahn emphasized that his focus remains on finishing the 2025 season strong. “We’ve got a lot of football left to play, and I’m not done yet. I want to go out on a high note.”

The announcement marks the end of an era, but it’s clear Malzahn’s legacy will leave an indelible mark on Florida State and the broader college football landscape.
