Excitement as former Stanford mentor David Shaw joins Lions Coaching crew.

Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw prepares for action on November 5, 2022, before facing off against the Washington State Cougars at Stanford Stadium in California.

The Detroit Lions have hired former Stanford University head coach David Shaw as their new passing game coordinator. Shaw, a four-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, boasts an impressive 96-54 record and is the winningest coach in Stanford history.

After a brief stint as a senior personnel executive with the Denver Broncos in 2024, Shaw returns to coaching, joining head coach Dan Campbell’s staff. This marks his first coaching position since leaving Stanford in 2022, and his first NFL coaching role since 2005. Shaw’s NFL experience includes assistant coaching positions with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens.

After a historic 15-win season in 2024, the Detroit Lions saw significant changes to their coaching staff. Former OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn departed to become head coaches with the Chicago Bears and New York Jets, respectively. To fill the void, the Lions hired:

– David Shaw as passing game coordinator
– John Morton as new OC
– Kelvin Sheppard as new DC
– Tashard Choice as running backs coach.
– Scottie Montgomery shifted roles to assistant head coach and wide receivers coach.

These staff changes aim to maintain the Lions’ momentum from their record-breaking season.
