The underdog story: Ex-Michigan walks on Cracks NFL Coaching Ranks.

Jesse Madden, grandson of NFL icon John Madden, is forging his own path in football. Despite being a lesser-known player as a Michigan football walk-on, Madden’s famous lineage made him a recognizable name among fans. Now, he’s taking the first step in his coaching career, joining the Washington Commanders as an offensive quality control coach. This marks a significant milestone for Madden as he transitions from college athlete to NFL coach, aiming to establish his own identity beyond his legendary grandfather’s shadow.

Jesse Madden, grandson of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden, is set to begin his rookie season in the NFL after graduating from the University of Michigan. He initially played as a quarterback during his freshman year before transitioning to defensive back. Madden was also part of Michigan’s 2024 national championship team.

In the NFL, all sub-field coaching positions have the chance to work directly with players, similar to how analysts can now coach at the college level.

Madden will reunite with former Michigan team captain Mike Sainristil, who played a key role as a starter for the Commanders last season, helping lead them to a playoff run that ended in the NFC Championship Game.
