Dusty May, the head coach of the University of Michigan men’s basketball team, has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the Wolverines through the 2029-30 season. This new agreement comes amid speculation linking him to his alma mater, Indiana University, following the announcement that Indiana’s head coach, Mike Woodson, will step down at the end of the current season.
Under the terms of the extension, May’s annual salary will increase by $1 million, bringing it to $4.625 million. Additionally, his buyout clause has been raised to $7.5 million. These adjustments reflect Michigan’s commitment to retaining May, who has made a significant impact in his first season with the team.
May, 48, took over as Michigan’s head coach in March 2024, succeeding Juwan Howard. Prior to joining Michigan, he spent six successful seasons at Florida Atlantic University, where he compiled a 126-69 record and led the Owls to a Final Four appearance in 2023. In his inaugural season with the Wolverines, May has revitalized the program, leading the team to a 20-6 record and positioning them at the top of the Big Ten Conference with a 12-3 mark. This impressive performance has garnered national attention, with May being named one of 15 coaches on the watch list for the Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year award.
Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel expressed his enthusiasm for the extension, stating, “Dusty has brought a level of energy and success to our program that has exceeded our expectations. We are thrilled to have him continue leading our team.” May echoed these sentiments, emphasizing his dedication to the program and his desire to build on the team’s success. “We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done,” he remarked.
The decision to extend May’s contract also addresses concerns about potential interest from Indiana University, where May played as a student manager under legendary coach Bob Knight. With Woodson’s impending departure, speculation arose that May might return to his alma mater. However, the new contract extension effectively removes any uncertainty regarding his future, ensuring that he will remain at Michigan for the foreseeable future.
This development is a testament to the positive trajectory of Michigan’s men’s basketball program under May’s leadership. His ability to quickly adapt and implement a successful system has revitalized the team, making them a formidable contender in the Big Ten Conference. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on May and the Wolverines to see how they build upon their current success and continue to elevate the program to new h
eights.
