Jai Lucas, 36, has been appointed as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball team, succeeding Jim Larranaga, who retired midseason in December. Lucas, the son of former NBA player and coach John Lucas, brings a wealth of experience to Miami’s program.
Before joining Miami, Lucas served as associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Duke University under Coach Jon Scheyer. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in recruiting top talent, including No. 1 recruit Cooper Flagg for the 2024 class, and twins Cameron and Cayden Boozer for 2025. Duke’s defense also flourished under his guidance, ranking among the nation’s best in adjusted defensive efficiency and 2-point field goal percentage defense.
Prior to Duke, Lucas honed his coaching skills at the University of Kentucky and the University of Texas, contributing significantly to their recruiting successes and on-court performances.
At Miami, Lucas inherits a team that has faced challenges, evident in their 6-24 record this season. His immediate objectives include revitalizing the program, emphasizing relationships, player development, and fostering a competitive culture. Lucas expressed enthusiasm about Miami’s potential, highlighting the university’s elite academics, passionate fan base, and commitment to athletic excellence.
Lucas is expected to begin his tenure after Duke’s regular-season finale against North Carolina. He will be introduced to the Miami community at a press conference on M
onday.
